A hands-on beginner woodwork course to get you using saws, drills and screws and building with confidence.

This friendly, hands-on day is designed for absolute beginners in woodwork. You’ll get clear, practical guidance from our experienced tutor and plenty of time to practise each skill. By the end of the day, you’ll have the confidence and know-how to start making your own wooden projects at home.

Older teen learners (age 15–17) are welcome on this course for half price when attending with an adult, please contact us for full details

    If you get stuck on a project after the course or have questions you forgot to ask, we'll arrange a video call with Jonty to point you in the right direction and make sure you’re feeling confident to crack on.

  • All tools, materials, and safety essentials provided
    You only need to bring yourself and your interest in learning beginners woodwork. We supply everything you need, from saws and drills to protective glasses and clamps, so you can focus on learning with confidence.

  • Limited half price Teen places!  
    We actively encourage young people to learn. Teens, age 15 - 17, are half price when attending with a full paying adult (one teen per adult). This is an adult course with space for supported teen learners. Contact us for details.

  • Unlimited tea and coffee
    Because a proper brew is workshop essential!

If you’ve never picked up a saw before but want to take on beginner woodworking projects, you’re in exactly the right place! Start your woodworking journey here and get the fundamentals right first. You’ll leave with the skills – and confidence – to tackle your projects at home.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?:

  • Complete beginners who want to get started in woodwork with clear, patient instruction and plenty of non-judgemental practice.

  • DIYers who want to build simple, useful things from wood at home.

  • Adults bringing a teen (15–17) who’s keen to learn practical skills (teen ticket half price with a full paying adult - click here for details).
    The minimum age for this woodworking course is 15.

ABOUT THE COURSE:

Over the day, you’ll get to grips with the core skills every beginner woodworker needs. We’ll start with workshop safety so you feel confident right from the off – how to clamp your work securely and protect your eyes from dust and debris.

Measuring & Marking
How to measure accurately, mark cleanly, and avoid common layout mistakes.


Choosing & Buying Wood
Where to buy timber locally or online, how to spot good quality pieces, and why wood movement matters.

Sawing Skills (lots of practice!)
Confident, straight cuts using panel saws, tenon saws, Japanese saws, and more. Bench hook setup, body positioning, and sawing over a sawhorse for longer cuts.

Simple Joints & Fixings
How to make strong butt joints with screws: pilot holes, countersinking, screw choice – plus how to recognise different screw heads (PZ, PH, Torx etc.) and match them with the right driver bit.

Using an Electric Drill (for woodwork)
Drill setups, bits for wood, speeds, and safe technique for clean holes and tidy fixings.

Designing Your First Projects
How to plan simple builds, standard dimensions to know, and how to avoid racking so your projects stay strong and stable.

Sanding & Finishing
The basics of sanding for a clean, flat surface, plus how to prep properly so oils, waxes or paints go on smoothly and last.

Adhesives Overview
When to use D3, D4, PU glue and others, plus clamping tips for solid joints.

 

TOOLS YOU WILL USE:
• Various types of saws including British and Japanese styles 
• Marking tools including combination square
• Electric drill & screws 
• Sandpaper 
• Wood glue

THE VENUE:
Located just off the A287 on the Hampshire / Surrey border, Ash & Co. Workshops is a super friendly, fun and relaxed environment that welcomes all ages and all genders to share in our passion for making. We want you to leave the workshop happy, content and full of knowledge that you didn’t have before. 

We’re there with you to offer advice every step of the way and always have time to answer all your questions.  All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided on the course and complimentary tea, coffee and water are available throughout the day.
