Make a Chopping Board Workshop
Make a Chopping Board Workshop
Enjoy a fantastic woodworking experience making a beautiful chopping board, cheese board or serving platter you can bring out at the next dinner party and say “I made that!”
Suitable for complete beginners, our one-day course will guide you through the process of making your own custom chopping board or serving platter from a 'blank' of the finest quality furniture-grade solid Ash hardwood.
Jonty, your friendly instructor, will show you how to transform it into a truly beautiful and food safe chopping board using a whole range of hand tools and equipment.
Please note: if you are interested in a date that is fully booked please get in touch at hello@ashandcompany.co.uk. We sometimes get cancellations and can put you on the waiting list for a bench space.
ABOUT THE COURSE:
Running from 10am-4pm, you will begin the day with a demonstration of how to use a range of hand tools to complete your board. We'll take you through setting up all the tools, let you practice with them and show you basic sharpening techniques before letting you loose on your main project.
This will include a hand plane, a variety of saws, a spoke shave, block planes, rasps, files, chisels and various other sanding and finishing tools.
You can choose to drill a hole for a handle, cut a special shape in the side or decide to simply make as you go and work the wood until you have the shape you are after.
We will give you full instruction for the whole day so even if you've never done any woodwork before, you'll leave with an awesome chopping board that will last for life!
And that’s not all. You will also learn how to expertly sand and apply a natural, food-safe finish to the board to ensure it will be quality enough to adorn the finest kitchens and tables across the land!
As standard, we supply solid Ash hardwood with every course. This is a lovely wood to work with, is quite light in colour with beautiful grain patterns and looks great when finished.
All safety equipment and PPE is provided for the course and there will be a short lunch break (lunch is not included).

Had a brilliant time on this course making a cheeseboard with Jonty's expert instruction and positive attitude. Everything was hands-on, and we all walked away with beautifully finished cheeseboards and tons of new knowledge.
We started with some quick tool tutorials before jumping in ourselves, and were quickly ready to design and begin work on the cheeseboards themselves. Jonty's expertise was always available, but plenty of space was allowed for experimentation and learning by doing. Anyone taking this course will find it accessible but leave fully inspired to create more things out of wood with hand tools.
An all round brilliant experience that I'll remember for a long time, and I'll definitely be looking out for more Ash&Co courses to book onto in the future.
Hi Theo, thank you so much for taking the time to send us your feedback and so pleased you enjoyed the workshop :-)
Excellent course, particularly the hands on use of tools and coaching in using them. Excellent hands on teaching, yet still socially isolated (Covid-19). Really passionate about ash and woodworking, and extremely skilled. Give you the space and encouragement you need to be creative, but also give the support to enable you to bring your design to life.
Cheeseboard looks impressive, yet it’s actually very simple. We’ve booked on another course.
A shame we don’t have children as Ash + co educational courses for children, and child products, look like a huge amount of fun.
Never done anything like this before, Jonty was a great teacher. CanÕt wait to come and try out my new skills on some of the other courses!
Jonty was the perfect tutor, tailoring the class to to different levels of experience. I'm looking forward to coming back with the kids.
Really enjoyed. Cant wait to try another one. Thank you so much for your patience.
