Make a Kumiko Coaster

Learn the incredible art of Japanese Kumiko and take home a truly beautiful piece you can cherish forever in this very popular three hour course.

Step in to the enchanting world of woodworking at Ash & Co workshops where Kumiko takes centre stage on this three hour course.

We’ll welcome you in and get you set up with all the essential tools - a bench hook, a Japanese saw, a freshly sharpened chisel, a block plane and a nice cup of tea. All essential tools for the job.

We’ll show you some basic sawing and sharpening techniques and show you how to use our custom-made Kumiko blocks to create your very own Kumiko masterpiece.

Then, we’ll show you how we prepare the Kumiko strips for use before getting immersed in the detail by spending the evening in a lovely relaxing environment while carving all the pieces for your Kumiko pattern.

Once your pattern is complete, we’ll finish by creating a beautiful and perfectly fitting mitred frame for your coaster before final sanding and adding a protective oil finish.

The Kumiko coaster course is pure relaxation and encompasses everything we love about woodworking at Ash & Co – Precision, quality, mindfulness, learning new skills - all in a sociable environment with a nice cup of tea!

Our relaxed and experienced instructor Jonty will guide you every step of the way and even if you have never seen a chisel before, you’ll be a budding Kumiko master by the end of the evening!
