Home Education Woodwork and DIY Skills Course

Join us for a special four week course aimed at young people age 8+ who are keen to learn beginner DIY and Woodworking skills. 

• This course is made up of 4 individual sessions
• Each session is 1.5 hours
• All young people must be accompanied by an adult at every session.
• There is no charge for supervising adults
• Children must be at least 8 years old and willing to work hard and learn new skills

This course is designed for young people who are looking for an in-depth introduction to DIY and woodworking skills. Over the four weeks we will cover all the essentials to get started as a maker, including using saws, hammers, screwdrivers and drills. You will put these tools to practical use, culminating in making your own bench hook that will be yours to keep.

Jonty, our expert tutor, will teach you how to properly and carefully use each tool and there will be plenty of opportunity for practical experience.

This course is only for young people who are genuinely interested in learning woodworking skills. We will be using real ‘adult’ tools, and whilst this will be done safely and with full instruction, there will be no room for kids who mess around in this course!

What woodworking and DIY skills will children learn?

Week One: Learn how to saw, measure, mark-up and use wood glue. Discover saws and safe workholding. Have lots of practice sawing wood.

Week Two: Learn how to use hammers and nails properly to attach pieces together. Shape wood using rasps and files and use these two new skills to make a small take-home project.

Week Three: Learn all about drills and how to use them. Get hands-on and make lots of holes!

Week Four: Bring all your new skills together to make your own bench hook – yours to keep and use on your woodworking journey.
