About the tools
The Platinum Kit is just excellent - I would have given my right arm for a kit like this when I was younger! There's nothing you can't do with this kit and it will keep your child entertained for decades to come!
As well as all the items listed in the Gold, Silver and Bronze Kits (see below) - The Platinum Kit also has:
200mm adjustable bevel - take marking to the next level by using a bevel to copy angles and more.
Wood chisel 3 piece set - this chisel starter set is an ideal way to start. 3 chisels made from polished carbon steel - 10mm, 19mm, 25mm chisels ready for use. (Note: Chisels really are dangerous if not used properly so be sure to supervise at all times.)
We’ve added a floorboard saw to this kit as it’s easy for small hands to hold and cuts easily with it’s fine teeth - perfect for the beginner.
3mm twist gimlet - this great little tool lets you drill perfect little starter holes by hand so the screws will go in easily. Such a useful tool to keep for life!
Stubby screwdriver set - stubby screwdrivers are great for kids and adults alike, they're easier to control for smaller hands and get the job done well. A must have for anyone building anything.
Carpenters' marking gauge - an essential next level tool for when accuracy becomes important. A marking gauge like this is a carpenters must have accessory for finer work and is something you can treasure and look after for life.
Carpenters pencil set - 3 carpenters pencils to make quick and easy marks that last.
All the tools below are also included from the Gold, Silver and Bronze Kits:
A Cotton Apron so you don't get messed up when you're woodworking
A carpenters awl - this sharp point is essential for marking a hole location ready for drilling or for helping to get a screw started without drilling - such a useful tool and an essential for any carpenter.
300mm ruler - Showing both Metric and Imperial Measurements, a metal ruler is super important when you want to be a bit more accurate. It's included here!
C clamp three clamp set with up to 75mm holding capacity - this kit is perfect as a starter set to have some clamps in the bag ready to hold down work safely. Simple screw action makes them easy to use for kids too.
Draper Block Plane - A woodworking essential in our opinion. Learn how to use a block plane properly and you can do all sorts with it. Shape the wood, take the edges off to leave a pro finish, flatten a small surface - the block plane can do it all! You'll need to learn how to sharpen this properly too which is really important part of woodworking.
A beechwood mallet - mallets are essential and excellent tools to use. They don't do as much damage as the stubby hammers and a great for kids to use. This is an expert level tool which will last a whole lifetime.
Ratcheting Screwdriver and 14 Piece Bit Set - This simple screwdriver will do it all! Click it one way to do up screws and the other way to undo - makes life easy for kids with less dexterity. All the bits are kept in the back of the screwdriver too so they won't get lost.
Double Pinion Hand Drill - This excellent hand drill from Draper is just perfect for kids to use. Spin the hand to drill a hole - it teaches concentration and perseverance and kids will make lots of use of this!
Wood Boring Drill Bit Set - These excellent brad point drill bits stop the drill from jumping around and make it easier for kids to get started drilling. A great addition to the Gold Kit.
All the tools below are also included from the Silver and Bronze Kits:
A great little 3m measuring tape so you can accurately measure the wood and make proper marks.
We've also included a lovely flat faced spoke shave in this kit which is great for kids to use to shape the wood quickly. The very sharp blade underneath is set so that it takes a little shaving of wood allowing kids to smooth off edges and create rounded profiles.
We've also added a really important tool to this kit - a Try square. This is an essential little tool for budding woodworkers.
Another addition for the kit is the sanding sponge for perfect finishing.
All the tools below are also included from the Bronze Kit:
A Second Fix Draper Venom Double Ground 350mm Tool Box Saw - This shortened saw is a great addition to the floorboard saw and gives a lovely finish. It's fine teeth make it easy to use and a great toolbox must have.
The rasp and file lets kids work the wood by scraping it away until they have the shape they’re looking for. With a little effort, kids can create wonderful shapes for their projects from all kinds of wood.
We included the the stubby claw hammer too, which is great for experimenting with nailing things together and has the ability to pull the nails out with the claw at the back. Perfect for small hands and the lighter weight is easier for children to use repeatably.
Of course we’ve included some anti-mist safety specs too which should be worn at all times!
Please note: We recommend you work on a suitable work table when doing woodwork. You need to be able to hold the wood safely from moving around. For a low cost option, check out our Draper Redline Foldable Workbench Here.
WARNING: Children should be supervised AT ALL TIMES when using these tools - they are proper tools and they are sharp.
Why we use proper tools for kids
At Ash & Co Workshops, we believe that kids should be using good quality, real woodworking tools when they’re learning to make things from wood and that’s why we’ve created our woodworking tool sets for kids. We’re fed up of seeing play tools or super low-quality tools in kits that are not up to the job!
Using real tools makes woodwork special, it teaches kids that yes, some things are sharp, heavy and dangerous and they learn to be careful accordingly.
Having nice tools teaches children to respect them so they don’t get ruined. Packing them away safely should be part of the job - It’s just not the same as play kits than can be left lying around.
In our workshops, there’s nothing I love more than showing a child how to use a hammer, a drill or a saw for the first time. Children start off thinking they can’t do it and after a bit of persistence, they’re hammering/sawing/drilling away like a pro.
The sense of achievement is clear to be seen - when kids manage to cut through their first piece of wood, hammer in their first nail or learn how to drill a hole they are given confidence that ‘they can do it’ and that leads to the next steps.
With these simple kits, some scrap wood and some nails - kids can make so many things - from scratch - using their own imaginations. You won’t believe what kids can come up with!
Above all else, you can spend some quality time together ‘making’ - In our opinion there’s nothing better.
Advice for parents
Check out our new instruction videos so you can show your child how to use these tools safely and start making stuff. We’ll launch more project videos as time goes on so you can build specific projects but to get started - let the kids lead the way. They’ll tell you exactly what they want to build.
Get some wood in stock - you can buy packs online easily and start with balsa wood for young children aged 5-7 - It’s super easy to work with when you’re getting started.
For older kids, buy pine or spruce - It’s more hardy but still soft enough to use easily.
I’d also recommend getting some pre-made shapes in for kids to use. Circles cut from small logs are great for making car wheels - and triangles and squares are handy to have around too!
